ABOUT
I grew up on West Willow Road in a small town called Willow Street in Lancaster County, PA. I played the tuba through high school but in my late teens I became interested in composing and have been writing music ever since. I moved to NYC to study composition at the Manhattan School of Music and later earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) degree from Columbia University.
I have gone through many transformations in my musical style but usually work within a basic atonal/12-tone aesthetic. I have written solo pieces, chamber music pieces and several large scale pieces. I’ve also experimented with composing a few 24-tone pieces that have yet to be performed. I am always looking forward to writing the next piece.
I am interested in creating different contexts to hear music other than the traditional concert setting which relies on elite wealth, displacement and exploitation, and in addition to composing, I have produced different iterations of concerts. I co-curated a concert series at Cornelia Street Cafe in 2000, put on several Concerts for Peace during the build-up to the Iraq War in 2003, and shortly after that, I co-founded Forecast Music, a composers collective which put on 24 concerts in 2 years. In 2015, I co-founded Julie & Elizabeths’ Anti-Capitalist Concert Series, a concert series of new music and audience discussion. I’m also a member of the Art Workers Inquiry, and my latest venture is as artistic co-director of new music composers’ collective Collide-O-Scope Music.
